The Charts in Early Years Foundation Stage Target Tracker

The charts in EYFS Target Tracker have been designed to create meaningful output without having to select numerous options and to also allow powerful customisation of pupil filter groups, subjects and periods plus specific comparisons within those selections.

This overview provides an explanation of each chart. Initially the chart will be displayed using the data for all the pupils chosen in the main Pupil Selection screen which may be a cohort, class or classes. It will also have a pre-selected range of periods and subjects

Load Early Years Foundation Stage Target Tracker and select your file

Choose the pupils you wish to chart. This may be one cohort or one class or multiple cohorts to compare attainment or progress. Tick the required pupils from the Pupil Selection screen.

Click on Charts from the menu ribbon

Development Matters – Percentage Achieved

This chart displays the average percentage of statements achieved within each month range in the Development Matters for the selected pupils. It allows the user to see where the greatest achievement is and where the pupils are currently working.

EYFS Profile – Subject Point Scores (Bar)

This chart displays the average raw scores for the current period (this will be Summer 2 if looking at data for pupils older than Reception) in each area of learning for the selected pupils, as a bar chart.

It is a useful way of seeing the balance across the curriculum and can help identify areas of strength and weakness.

EYFS Profile – Subject Point Scores (Spider)

Displays the same data as the Bar graph above. Choosing the Spider or Bar chart is a matter of personal preference but, once you begin customising these charts, the bar chart lends itself better to viewing multiple data series which are quite similar (for example comparing the average of boys and the average of girls) and the spider chart works better when viewing multiple time periods.

EYFS Profile – Progress

This chart displays the average raw score for all pupils in all subjects in each half-term from Reception Autumn 1 onwards as a line chart.

It is a good overview of progress throughout the year and can indicate that some more detailed analysis of progress in individual assessment scales is required when the average progress across a term is below one point

EYFS Profile – Rate of Progress

This chart displays the average rate of progress (for example, one point per term) in all areas of learning for all pupils in each half term.

This is a good way of identifying which terms show the most or least progress and can be an early warning if the rate of progress is particularly low across a whole term.

As the average achievement is 4 points in the Reception year for children starting in the autumn term you would expect to see a rate of progress of just over one point per term.

EYFS Profile – Individual Subject Points

This chart displays the percentage achievement for each individual statement in the selected area of learning. Initially this is PSE1 (Dispositions and Attitudes) but you may cycle through the other areas of learning using the Subject menu.

This is a good way of identifying any statements which have very poor coverage for the cohort and can help inform planning.

EYFS Profile – Percentage at or above score

This chart displays the percentage of children who have achieved six or more points in each assessment scale. The percentage of children achieving other totals and above may be displayed by changing the Score in the setup window.

Customising Charts – Pupils

When you display a chart, the data tab appears, the section to the left of the Data tab deals with Pupils.

Click the Gender Breakdown button to display data for the boys and the girls independently

To make further more advanced selections of pupils click the Select Pupils button. Use the Support Article – Filtering specific pupils or groups of pupils in Early Years Foundation Stage Target Tracker for more detailed help with this aspect.

Customising Charts – Subjects

All the charts allow subjects to be selected and changed. Some charts also allow the overall area of learning averages to be plotted also (PSE, CLL and PRN) as well as the total EYFSP average (average of all subjects) Simply click to add/remove ticks as required

Customising Charts – Period

All the charts allow either the specific periods (half-terms) to be chosen.

Some allow a period range to be defined. On some charts when multiple periods are chosen, an option to Stack Periods appears.

If you have made a number of changes to the data in your chart (for example, filtered a specific group of pupils and time periods) you may want to keep those settings when moving to view another chart. When clicking to view another chart you will see a dialog box asking if you wish to maintain your current setting (pupils, subjects and periods) or use the default settings. Clicking Use Default Settings will load the new chart with the original default children and time period

All charts can easily be exported to other software packages by clicking the Export tab and choosing Image
