By default all targets for KS2 children are based on their Yr2 teacher assessments. For pupils in KS1 targets are based on their end of Reception assessment. This provides a 'whole school' overview and allows assessment coordinators and SMT to clearly see how the cohort is performing towards achieving two whole levels progress at KS2. LA's and Ofsted will expect targets to be set from Yr 2, as setting them from the Yr 4 attainment tends to depress percentages.
However, a class teacher of year 4's to year 6's may prefer to see a target based on the previous years attainment in order to give them a realistic target for that year and support the performance management process. It is possible to alter the 'on screen targets' temporarily but, as the progress between key stages is so important, Target Tracker will default to targets based on the end of Reception and KS1 each time the software is loaded.
To temporarily change the target view options
Select Target View Options from the Target Setting menu (Select the Tools tab if you are running Office 2007)
There are 4 options for viewing targets-
· Years 3-6 from Year 2 (Targets are set in KS2 from the final Yr2 TA) default option
· Years 5-6 from Year 4 (Targets are set from the Year 4 TA result if present and the Year 4 Test result if TA not available)
· Years 2-6 from previous year (Targets at Yr 3 are based on Yr 2 TA. Targets at Yrs 4-6 are based on the previous year TA if present and the previous year Test result if TA not available)
· Display User Defined Targets (Toggles the tick on or off in the menu and allows the targets in the tracking data sheet to be viewed with or without displaying any permanently saved Individually Set Targets)
Using a combination of these views should enable different users within school to view appropriate targets.
On occasion it may be necessary to select a specific pupil, subject and year and alter the target permanently. This is often the case when dealing with SEN or G&T pupils where appropriate targets require the professional knowledge of the teaching staff within the school.

Important -When viewing the file in Termly Tracker
The option 'cell colour comparison with targets' view in Termly Tracker works from the target view last saved in Primary Target Tracker.
For example; if you are working with a year five cohort file and you alter the target view option to set targets from the previous year and choose not to display User Defined Targets, these are the targets Termly Tracker will use (provided you save the data file when exiting PTT). Termly Tracker will give you a pop up message explaining the view when you switch to compare with targets.
When you reload Primary Target Tracker the software will still reset itself to base the targets on Yr 2 TA's. This is to avoid possible confusion and maintain consistency but the user should be aware of the targets view on save and make sure it is the desired one.
