It is possible to view the data on the Tracking Data sheet in Primary Target Tracker in Average Point Scores. This makes calculating Value Added in points easier.
Load a file into Primary Target Tracker. It is better to filter to just the columns with data that you are interested in, before going into the Points Viewer. To do this click on the required columns whilst holding down the ctrl key on the keyboard. When all columns have been chosen click on the Filter menu - Column Filters - Selected columns. This will leave you with just the required columns on the screen. Then click on the Points Viewer button.
The chosen columns will be displayed but with the data converted to Average Points. At the top of each column is an Average value, for the contents of the column. There is also a % Upper, Middle and Lower level. Hover the mouse over these cells to see the levels.
If you are looking at KS1 to KS2 data you should have data in the Ave KS1 Points and the Ave KS2 Points columns at the beginning of the spreadsheet. Ave KS1 Points is an average of the TA in Y2 for Reading, Writing and Maths. Ave KS2 Points is an average of the SAT Y6 scores for English, Maths and Science.
The average expected progress during KS2 is 12 points i.e. 1 point per term. The value in the cell at the top of the Progress column is the school's Value Added, for example if the school has average progress of 12 points exactly the school's VA is said to be 100, if it has average progress of 13 then the school's VA is 101.
The Toggle Scale button can be used to switch between viewing the values as per the Average Points Scale or using the 2 point scale where each third of a level is worth 2 points.
This scale switch can be particularly useful to demonstrate progress during KS2 e.g. KS1 to end of Y5, as the Average Points scale does not recognise progress in sub levels, except for within Level 2.
The Conversion Chart showing the difference between APS and the 2 point scale is available to view in the PTT software in the Help menu – Tables - Conversion.
